Our client a leading European company specializing in sustainable solutions for the recycling of car batteries is currently looking for Operations Director / Plant Manager. The company’s operations focus on minimizing the environmental impact of battery disposal and maximizing the recovery of valuable raw materials such as lithium, cobalt, nickel, and graphite. The organization’s cutting-edge technology and efficient processes ensure that we are at the forefront of the circular economy, playing a key role in the green transition and supporting the automotive and renewable energy sectors.
Responsibilities:
- Oversee and manage all plant operations, ensuring optimal efficiency and safety in the processing of spent batteries
- Ensure the plant meets production goals, quality standards, and environmental compliance requirements
- Monitor and optimize plant performance, identifying areas for improvement and implementing corrective actions
- Lead, mentor, and manage a diverse team of operators, engineers, and other staff members
- Foster a collaborative, safety-focused culture, providing regular training and development opportunities for staff
- Ensure clear communication and coordination between departments to achieve operational goals
- Ensure plant operations comply with all European and local environmental regulations
- Background in working in a waste management sector working with hazardous materials and dealing with emissions standards
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of industry regulations and standards, and implement necessary updates to the plant’s operations
- Manage audits and inspections related to regulatory compliance and sustainability
- Oversee the implementation and maintenance of advanced recycling technologies
- Follow market trends including mechanical and chemical processes for battery dismantling, sorting, and materials recovery
- Ensure continuous improvement in recycling efficiency and the quality of recovered materials, such as lithium, cobalt, nickel, and other critical minerals
- Stay informed about technological advancements in battery recycling and identify opportunities for innovation
- Champion a strong health and safety culture, ensuring all safety protocols are followed to prevent accidents, injuries, and environmental incidents
- Conduct regular risk assessments, safety audits, and training programs to mitigate workplace hazards
- Oversee the logistics of incoming spent batteries, ensuring proper storage, handling, and processing procedures
- Manage relationships with suppliers, partners, and customers to ensure the reliable supply of raw materials and the distribution of recycled materials
- Drive initiatives to minimize the plant's environmental footprint, such as reducing energy consumption, water use, and waste generation
- Ensure the proper treatment, recycling, and disposal of hazardous materials in compliance with environmental laws
- Report on sustainability metrics and performance to corporate leadership
- Prepare and manage the plant’s budget, controlling operational costs while maintaining efficiency and quality standards
- Monitor expenses, implement cost-saving initiatives, and ensure financial targets are met
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Chemical, Environmental), Industrial Management, or a related field
- Advanced degrees or certifications in sustainability or environmental management are a plus
- 5+ years of experience in operations management, preferably in the recycling, energy, or manufacturing industries
- Proven experience in battery recycling, waste management, or related technical operations is highly desirable
- Strong understanding of European regulations related to waste management, recycling, and environmental sustainability
- Technical knowledge of battery recycling processes (e.g., mechanical separation, pyrometallurgical, hydrometallurgical techniques)
- Leadership skills with experience managing cross-functional teams
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Proficiency in budgeting, project management, and process optimization
- Knowledge of Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) regulations and best practices
- Experience working in a fast-paced manufacturing or environmental industry
- Fluency in English and knowledge of other European languages (e.g., German, French, or Spanish) is an advantage
- Knowledge of the latest trends and innovations in battery technologies, including lithium-ion, lead-acid, and emerging battery chemistries
